Chrysalis
Chrysalis is a series of mixed media images composed of photographs and drawings layered together digitally. The photographs use a long exposure to capture several moments at once, a reference to the sensation of time distortion during the pandemic lockdown. I have augmented these photographs with drawings of elements from nature, representative of the desire to venture outside. The images are all self-portraits, and each one addresses a different emotional stage of this new reality: adjustment, stasis, and re-emergence as a changed being. The first, Fermentation, reflects attempts to seek peace in confusion. The second, Rooted, depicts settling into the status quo–the creation of a false paradise at home. The third, Exuviation, portrays a cautious re-entry into the wider world as a new creature, altered by the experience of time in confinement.
